Podcast Headliner: 5 Good Minutes with University of Michigan Professor Andy Markovits

Today’s Podcast Headliner is 5 Good Minutes with Andy Markovits, the popular University of Michigan professor who co-wrote the book Offside: Soccer and American Exceptionalism. Markovits has just released his memoir, The Passport as Home: Comfort in Rootlessness. Markovits was born in Romania, moved to Vienna and later emigrated to the United States. In this clip from our interview, he recounts listening to the 1954 World Cup final between Hungary and West Germany on the radio with his father—who would tell him the most important thing about the day was that it was July 4, the independence day of the country (the U.S.) that he hoped his son would live in someday.

Just as a reminder, the entirety of my audio podcast episodes are no longer hosted on my Substack newsletter. If you already consume my podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or other listening platforms, nothing has changed at all. But if you have been listening to my audio podcast solely through this newsletter, you’ll need to sign up for the full pod at one of the links above. It’s still free to listen to.

Fútbol with Grant Wahl is a reader-supported soccer newsletter. You can sign up (free or paid) to get my posts in your inbox. The best way to support my work is by taking out a paid subscription. Gift subscriptions are also available.
