On a night of powerful emotions and images, the USMNT beat Iran to advance to the World Cup knockout rounds and continued winning new fans inside and outside the United States.
That hug between Robinson and the Iranian player said more than a thousand words. Really proud of the immense class the whole USA team has shown while also playing some outstanding soccer. I admit to being frustrated at times with the late-game fades, but they pulled through and made this WC a success. Thanks for the story, Grant.
I thought the players on both sides did a great job of leaving the political tensions at the touchline. Amazing pose and maturity demonstrated by the young US players led by the Captain.
This is the kind of writing we subscribe for, Grant. You understand what we’re interested in knowing that we’re not getting elsewhere. Love your quiet, constant pride in these guys and love that you allow us to share in it thru your writing!
Whether it’s stringing in social media or magazine style, I’m enjoying the dispatches both with some local flavor, political intrigue, and the reason we watch (the game). Thanks for keeping us up with what’s going on. Happy to be a subscriber.
Thanks Grant. Glad I upgraded to the paid subscription. You've been my "go to" throughout the last 10 days. You take on the USA v. Iran pre-match presser on Monday was particularly insightful. Please keep up the great work and know that those of us back in the States appreciate your hard and good work!
Also, I couldn't be more proud of this team. They have played some beautiful, smart, technically gifted football. And they've done it with so much heart and without fear. I mean, Tyler Adams? Holy crap. He has been immense from minute 1 against Wales to minute 100 against Iran. And he's just the most glaring example. You could go up and down the lineup with praise.
It's pretty incredible to know that the first thing out of the punditry (particularly from outside the US) hasn't been "hard working," "well-conditioned," or "disciplined." It's a credit to them that they are being recognized for their merits as players, not just as athletes. And, as those videos show...and perhaps most importantly...as good human beings. Whatever happens on Saturday, these guys deserve all the praise.
That video of American players comforting Ramin Rezaeian made my day. Grant, your idealism and humanity are a huge part of why I subscribe. Thanks, and keep up the great work!
Thanks Grant. As much as I enjoy your writing, I for one had not seen those shots of the hotel and Pulisic in the hospital so it was great to wake up to your post! Thanks for all your hard work.
It’s about way more than football, isn’t it? And remember these guys are KIDS. Some can’t legally *drink*! I know I didn’t have anywhere near Tyler’s or Tim’s class & poise at their age. Couldn’t be prouder of them. Go get ‘em on Saturday!

A reason I subscribe to your work is that it DOES cover all aspects of the match and competition. Keep it coming.

I don't mind you including the social media! I appreciate having a curated selection of the best and most relevant posts.
Don't hug Christian too hard Tim!!
Love the callback to 94. Better performance than I think is remembered in regards to USMNT history.
Great one, Grant.

Hey Grant. Any chance Mexico looks at an American for their next coach?
This is great stuff, thanks Grant! I’m really impressed with the poise and maturity that our players exhibited.

This helps everyone understand this was far beyond the game.
