AL-KHOR, Qatar — The USMNT tied England 0-0 on Matchday 2 of the World Cup on Monday. Here are my three thoughts on the game: GrantWahl.com is reader-supported. Best shot-stopper is US history? Tim Howard is really mad right now :)
Tremendous effort by Keeper Defense and Midfield.
What is Berhalter thinking with Reyna? Saving him for the QuarterFinals? Totally agree w Grant on waiting too long.
And can we please work on something different on the corners? My head hurts from hitting the brick wall over and over again.
Best referee of the tournament so far. Fantastic.
Before the game, I thought a tie would be a great result, but after watching that game, they should’ve had the win. And I agree the subs should’ve come on sooner, particularly Aaronson.
If we beat Iran, this game will look great in retrospect. If we don't, it will look extraordinarily frustrating, in retrospect. Ditto game 1.
The set pieces are killer. Gotta convert some of those.
If you’re Berhalter... how much are you changing for Iran on Tuesday? Formation? I’d start Reyna, but do you throw the entire kitchen sink at them? Three in the back?
Totally agree, especially about the substitutions. Get them into the freaking game. I kept picturing tired legs leading to a game-deciding moment.
Gregg really needs to figure out the striker spot. It’s not a knock on Wright, but aside from one headed half chance I can barely remember him touching the ball. I know Gregg loves his system but something needs to change, otherwise I don’t see where the goals are coming from.
More ink needs to be spilled about how Yunus Musah almost lost the game for the US in the 92nd minute. At the end of the game, in our quarter, near the sideline, he pushed an English player down with both hands. The English player was trying to get control of the ball, running away/towards their own goal and near the side line. This wasn't a do-anything-because-they're-about-to-score situation - this was a stupid thing to do! England got a free kick, whipped in a driven cross with nine English players sprinting at our goal being guarded by nine American defenders, put the ball on Harry Kane's forehead charging towards our goal ten feet in front of the goal mouth, and we are extremely lucky - it's dumb luck - he didn't head it straight into the goal and we didn't lose the game. Yunus Musah (almost single-handedly?) lost the game for the US. This would have hurt very badly.
i hope ferreira gets a shot up too vs iran!
Reyna needs more time to get into the game. Why not start him and sub when he runs out of gas? I really hope that’s the plan vs Iran
Isn’t it somewhat obvious at this point that Reyna is not fit to play more than he has? Every time Reyna has been fit Berhalter has started him. This is clear gamesmanship to keep the other team guessing. I bet he plays 30 minutes versus Iran, and hopefully that hamstring holds up.
Grant: how many episodes of “Good Rivals” should we expect?
Agree with the need to insert Reyna sooner.
Otherwise, GGG got the tactics spot on - out coaching Southgate.
On paper, England are much more talented. Rice and Bellingham will sell for a collective $150 million.
I’ve got no dog in the Berhalter argument. But I feel like we created more than England, and don’t buy the general sentiment that it’s despite Berhalter.
I think Reyna starts vs Iran in place of Weah.
Did anyone else notice Dest's body language around his departure? He was definitely hurting for a while and angry he didn't come out earlier. Kept signaling to the bench before, and was chirping at the staff after
How/where can I see the stats/analytics for teams and players after a game?
Did the morning result of Iran winning have an impact on the line-up? Or did coach just go with the one he had planned out all along? Will Gio start against iran?
