Hey there! I wanted to take some time to update you on what I’m working on here for the newsletter and what I’ll be experimenting with in the weeks ahead to see what works and what doesn’t. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate you signing up to get my posts in your inbox, whether it’s free posts only or all my posts with a paid subscription. It’s my job to give you quality worth paying for, and I promise I’ll do everything I can to earn that paid subscription.
A series on some of the most intense rivalries would be fun! You could cover some of the famous ones, of course, but also some that are lesser known from all around the world. Maybe even some international rivalries too? I see America v Chivas is coming up this weekend — I know it’s a big rivalry but I don’t necessarily know a lot of the history or stories associated with it. It would be fun to read something on a rivalry in the week leading up to the game.
I think an accompanying video series of your travels to different matches could be fun. Maybe embed yourself with some of the opposing fans. And also, maybe delve into a story that's currently going on in that country.
There's so much content nowadays, it's hard to decide what's worth paying for. There's a plethora of "reaction" analysis out there. Because we live in a world with an abundance of instant takes, I believe that the way journalists can earn the loyalty of subscribers is by providing depth and insight over reaction and commentary on the news of the day.
I’ve been a huge fan of your soccer journalism for years and I immediately signed up as a paid subscriber as part “thank you” and part to help fund future efforts for you. I’ve most enjoyed your “Three Thoughts” columns (was great to see the Chelsea game version recently) and your great insights on the USMNT (at the match level and the macro level) as well as the international game in general.
I think what I’ve liked most about your writing is 1) I often feel like you have “inside information” on players, teams, etc through your relationships, 2) your style tends to be direct and provide opinions in the right spots without being overly opinionated where not needed, and 3) you tend to quickly provide insights on the most topical stories (a key match, important breaking soccer news, etc).
Hopefully that helps. Thanks for the great writing over the years on the game I love.
